Wayfarer, an art installation is opening at the Greasewood Gallery in The Hotel Paisano on January 11, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. Gretchen Lee Coles, sculptor and cartographer is presenting three mapping constructions and drawings about mapping as a performance art. The installation runs through February 17, 2013.
Coles began her investigation of mapping in sculpture after finishing an MFA in sculpture with a concentration in performance art at Indiana University, Bloomington in 1974. Eventually she became a cartographer finishing an MA in cartography at University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1989.
“I was interested in sculpture/props for performance art from the beginning. Once performers started interacting with the simple props, the performance realized itself.” After teaching performance art workshops in Edinburgh, London, Antwerp, and Darmstadt Coles started looking for a way to ground performance art and discovered mapping.
When gallery visitors view/interact with each of Coles’ mapping constructions they literally walk on foot from one geographic area to another as Wayfarers. The three geographic areas are: South America, Bali Indonesia and Marfa Texas.
