This show, "The Artist's Garden", provides me with an opportunity to paint one of my favorite subjects – flowers. I love them, I love to grow them, and I love to paint them. They are especially attractive to me as a subject because they allow the richest expression of color and the liveliest use of brushwork, adding rhythm to the piece. The theme of this show was an inspiration to get the creative ball rolling.
The pieces I've created for "The Artist's Garden" represent scenes of – or flowers from -- my garden, as well as Guzman's, my favorite local nursery. "Villa de Suenos" -- a villa in Mexico -- where I spent a wonderful week painting and collecting material for future works, was truly an artist's dream. Creating works in an impressionistic style, I paint on location outside, or from photographs I've taken. Painting from these photographs recalls memories of locales – enabling me to put on canvas not so much a reproduction, but the impression of them that lingers. My artistic goals are practice and discovery, and I strive for directness and simplicity in my work.

Kathleen

Kathleen Squires was born in Wisconsin to native Texans, schooled in Montana, and has lived in the Southwest since 1963. She turned to art following a successful career in advertising and public relations. Squires paints a wide range of subjects primarily in oil, but often in acrylic or watercolor. Her paintings are punctuated with fresh color and loose brushstrokes that convey movement and energy. Squires has no sophisticated philosophy about her work. She paints the things that catch her eye – capturing moments in time -- and hopes in the end to share them with others. "If what I produce conforms to some standard of excellence, that's a bonus," she says. "It seems I just must paint." "I continue to study and strive to achieve the apparent simplicity that comes from skill," she says. Her success as a fine artist is demonstrated by the numerous exhibitions in which she participates and in the private collections where her work resides. In addition to her representation in galleries, juried exhibits and individual shows, Squires paints and shows with "The Five Painters", most recently in El Paso TX, and Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Ruidoso, and Santa Fe, NM.
